We would like to take this opportunity to highlight the significance of proactive health measures – and the power of cancer prevention.
Join us as we delve into how this week can empower us all towards better health management.
Understanding cancer prevention action week
This year, from the 19th to 23rd February, is an initiative across the UK, led by World Cancer Research Fund to inspire change.
The most effective weapon we have, when it comes to cancer prevention, is raising awareness and inciting action, as the World Cancer Research Fund reports that up to 40% of cancer cases could be prevented through lifestyle and dietary changes.
According to Cancer Research UK, around 375,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year in the UK – highlighting the importance of preventive measures. The week is designed to highlight the importance of early cancer detection.
Lifestyle factors that can cause cancer
Cancer is not solely a product of genetics or bad luck – lifestyle choices play a significant role.
The following factors can significantly impact cancer risk:
● Poor nutrition: A diet high in processed foods and low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains significantly contributes to obesity – a known risk factor for up to 13 types of cancer.
● Limited physical activity: Sedentary lifestyles are increasingly common, and this lack of activity can increase the risk of cancer.
● Smoking: Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer globally – accountable for an estimated 22% of cancer deaths annually.
● Excessive alcohol consumption: Regular intake can increase your risk of several cancers.
By addressing these, we are all able to make choices that can reduce our risk of developing cancer, as well as improve our health and quality of life in general.
Proactive ways to prevent cancer
Building healthy habits is essential for cancer prevention.
Here are some actionable steps – supported by health organisations like the NHS and Cancer Research UK, to build up your defences against cancer.
● Stay active: Incorporate ‘exercise snacking’ into your routine – small, frequent bursts of activity. WCRF encourages people to find creative ways to integrate movement into their day, such as dancing while cooking. The World Health Organization advises at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity weekly. The NHS Live Well campaign also offers guidance on easy ways to become more active.
● Eat healthily: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can reduce your cancer risk. The NHS Eatwell Guide provides a comprehensive approach to this.
● Quit smoking: Smoking cessation is a critical step in cancer prevention. The NHS offers free support through its Stop Smoking services, which have been shown to significantly increase your chance of quitting successfully.
● Moderate alcohol intake: The NHS guidelines suggest keeping to 14 units a week or less to stay at low risk of alcohol-related harm.
● Regular screening and early detection: Attend regular screenings for cancers such as breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer. The NHS screening programmes provide free checks and tests designed to catch cancers early.
Empowering yourself and your community
Harnessing the strength of social support networks and engaging in public health initiatives can increase the impact of cancer prevention strategies:
● Community engagement: Support and participate in local events and initiatives that focus on promoting cancer awareness and healthy living. Cancer Research UK often highlights community-led initiatives and public health campaigns.
● Vaccinations: Encouraging community participation in vaccination programmes can significantly lower the incidence of these cancers. The NHS vaccination schedule includes vaccines for HPV to prevent cervical cancer and Hepatitis B to reduce liver cancer risk.
● Building support networks: Cultivating a support system of friends, family, and community members – committed to healthy living can provide the motivation and accountability needed to maintain a cancer-preventative lifestyle.
